Our Mission
The mission of the Great Plains Literacy Council is to positively impact Jackson and Harmon Counties through the provision of free literacy services to motivate adults so they can improve their lives, enrich their families, and strengthen their communities.
What We Do & How We Help
Great Plains Literacy Council provides basic adult literacy services in Jackson and Harmon Counties.
Services are free.
Our volunteer tutors assist learners improve their English Speaking Language skills, study for the Citizenship test and prepare for the Hi Set/GED test.
There is a Citizenship corner dedicated to those who want to submit the application, use the practice test feature or print out any form they may need.

Tutor Spotlights

Angelica M. Ortega, MSgt, USAF
Since summer 2024, Angelica Ortega has generously served as a volunteer tutor with the Great Plains Literacy Council, helping students improve their English and prepare for the U.S. Naturalization test. Her dedication and compassion have made a lasting impact on our learners.
As she retires from the Air Force and returns to her hometown, we thank Angelica for her service and wish her the very best on her next chapter!
FREE exercise classes
Chair Yoga with Erin Martinez every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:00-11:45 a.m.
Zumba Gold with Janel Picinich every Thursday at 3:45- 4:45 p.m.
These classes are held in the front meeting room of the Altus Public Library.
Chair Yoga has also extended to Hollis Mondays 12:00 noon. It is held at the Hollis Civic Center, Hollis
