Programs
HiSET
High School Equivalence preparation is offered through one-to-one tutoring. Small classes or online resources may also be used to tailor instruction to an individual’s goals and level of achievement. Contact us to enroll or discuss your personal needs.
ESL/ELL - English as a Second Language or English Language Learners
Adults who wish to increase their English language skills may enroll in this program. Individuals who complete an application with us will be matched with a tutor that is available on the day(s) and time(s) that work for both parties. GPLC provides a variety of printed and digital resources for improving language acquisition. We can help whether you know little or no English, or if you simply want to polish your speaking, reading, and writing skills!
Citizenship
One-to-one and small group tutoring is provided to assist individuals prepare for citizenship interviews and examinations. Interested patrons also receive ESL/ELL services appropriate for their ongoing English literacy goals. We also have a “Citizenship Corner” set up in the Altus Public Library where individuals have a private and secrete space to complete forms and applications on the USCIS website. Literacy staff and tutors can also help those on the pathway to citizenship search the USCIS website, practice their interview skills, and study civics questions.
Basic Adult Literacy
This program is designed to help those adults who may be native English speakers, but who are not confident in their reading and writing skills. Truly, to read is to know, and this program matches tutors who can pass on their love of reading to their students.
Health Literacy
Many individuals do not understand health care information, including how to take their medications properly or how to understand medical appointments, tests, or personal medical conditions and treatment. While this program is designed to help with those concerns, it is also designed to help our communities become healthier and stronger. GPLC provides healthy lifestyle programs and events through varied partnerships with other local service agencies and organizations, - all free of charge. Chair Yoga and Fresh Start are 2 such classes/events.
Family Literacy
GPLC has submitted a grant proposal to fund a series of new family literacy events. We should be notified if our proposal is successful in early May. In the meantime, please be sure to check the Altus & Hollis Public Library calendars.
